Area: The district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf incorporates Biesdorf, Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf, Marzahn they have
all been part of Berlin since 1920. It is the newest district in Berlin and has developed its own dynamics early on,
architects, planners and politicians have realised their major goal is to develop the district with the living standards of the
many families that reside here as their first priority. Almost every third person is a child or youth and this reflects in the
facilities around Marzahn, incorporating a wealth of sporting facilities, with high ranking schools and kindergartens very
close by.
During the division of the city, this area was located in the east and the development was a highly desirable location, only
industrious and hard working people who had accomplished special achievements for the East German society were privileged to be given the opportunity to live here. The result is very noticeable today as Marzahn’s schools and the levels
of qualifications from schools in this area are higher than the average in Berlin. The brand new Berlin Accident and
Casualty Hospital is the most modern in Europe, with the specialist eye clinic Augenklinik Marzahn located here also. The
district ranks as the third greenest district in Berlin with numerous parks. The Wutletal is one of the biggest green belts in
Berlin and features a 15.6 km hiking trail with the famous Baggersee Biesdorf, a huge artificial lake where Berliners enjoy
swimming and other water sports.
Access: Marzahn can be found just off the Blumberger Allee which runs eastward from the centre (Mitte) of Berlin.
The area is approximately 25 minutes from the centre of Berlin. Public transport links are excellent with local U bahn and
S bahn connections nearby. The huge Eastgate shopping mall, Helle Mitte and the Plaza Marzahn, are just some of the
local shopping facilities.
